Your engagement session is the warm-up for your wedding: a chance to get comfortable on camera and get images you’ll actually frame. What you wear matters more than you think.
The basic rules
- Coordinate, don’t match. Pick a palette of two or three colors and each wear pieces from it.
- Choose movement. Flowy dresses, long skirts, open jackets and scarves catch the wind and make photos feel alive.
- Texture beats pattern. Knits, linen, suede and denim add depth without distracting.
- Wear what you love. If you feel like yourself, it shows.
Colors that photograph beautifully
Earth tones (rust, olive, cream, camel, dusty blue) look great almost everywhere. Deep jewel tones are stunning in fall and winter. Soft neutrals feel timeless. Bright white can blow out in harsh sun; cream or ivory is more forgiving.

Dress for the location
Mountains & forests
Rich greens, cream knits, rust and burgundy. Boots with a heel for the walk in, and a blanket for cool evenings.
Red rock & desert
Contrast with the orange: dusty blue, sage, cream, black or a bold emerald. Long flowing dresses look incredible in desert wind.
Salt flats & beaches
Go bold — saturated colors pop against white salt or sand. Pack sunglasses for between shots.
City
Elevated and tailored: a sharp suit, a slip dress, a trench coat. Black and white is a classic for a reason.
What to avoid
- Large logos and busy small patterns.
- Neon colors that cast color onto skin.
- Brand-new shoes you haven’t walked in.
- Everyone in head-to-toe denim.
Packing checklist
- Two outfits (one casual, one dressy)
- Comfortable shoes for walking and nicer shoes for photos
- Lint roller, bobby pins, lip color, water
- A blanket, a hat or a bottle of champagne as fun props
